After several days of lessons that helped my CI Spy detectives unfold the mystery of Christiansburg Intitute, we boarded a school bus and headed to the site that once housed the best African American school in the area.
We were met on site by a team of professors from Virginia Tech who have developed an app that allowed us to go inside CI buildings that were boarded up or no longer existed. Students explored these buildings, found primary sources, and analyzed them to find out more about this very special part of our community.
Our class learned so much from this trip and the entire CI Spy experience. I highly recommend this unit to other fifth grade classes in Montgomery County. The Virginia Tech team is looking for more classrooms to teach these lessons and try the app. Your students will learn so much and take ownership of what they learned!!
